How do you calculate board feet of lumber?

A board foot is 144 cubic inches of lumber. Multiply a board's thickness, width, and length (all in inches), then divide by 144 — or use the woodworker's shortcut (thickness × width × length-in-feet) ÷ 12. Multiply by the number of identical boards for the total, then multiply board feet by your price per board foot to get cost.

4.00 bf × $6.50/bf

Linear feet: 8.00 ft of 1″ × 6″ stock. A $200 budget buys 30.8 bf at this price.

Board feet = thickness × width × length ÷ 144, × quantity — the same engine as the app.

What it is

A lumber calculator for anyone buying hardwood. Enter thickness in quarters, width, length, and quantity to get board feet and cost instantly — then build a cut list for a whole project and export the order sheet for the yard.

Why we built it

Hardwood is priced by the board foot, sold in quarters, and milled thinner than its nominal size — three traps that make mental math across a dozen boards error-prone. The web alternatives are ad-choked single-board forms with no notion of a project total, a waste allowance, or a per-species breakdown. Woodworkers needed the whole order added up correctly.
