How should weight be distributed on a boat trailer for stable towing?

Balanced, with enough of the load forward that a proper share of the weight presses down on the hitch
Too little weight on the hitch makes the trailer sway or “fishtail”; too much makes the tow vehicle tail-drag and steer badly. California's boating agency says to correct it by moving the trailer's wheel carriage forward or back, or by relocating movable gear. The exact tongue-weight share is set by your trailer's maker and the figure quoted varies by state, so check the rules and the manual where you boat.
