Not out yet — but it’s close.

Studying for your boating license test? 157 original questions across the six areas every boater safety course covers, with the navigation rules drawn in front of you instead of described, and a plan that works back from your test date.

  • 157 original questions, authored for this app against the public national boating-safety course topic standard rather than copied from a state course provider, each with a written explanation
  • The rules, drawn: 32 questions answer with a scene — the give-way track, sidelight arcs at their true 112.5°, the channel run between nun and can
  • A passage plan: set your test day, get a countdown, and run tonight's leg, a short drill aimed automatically at your weakest topic
  • Two fixed 50-question exam forms, A and B, that never share a question; leave mid-sit and it resumes exactly where you stowed it

Can you pass the boater safety test? Ten questions from the rules themselves.

The boating safety exam is the written test at the end of the boater-education course that most U.S. states now require before you can legally operate a motorboat or personal watercraft. Each state runs its own version through a course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), so the exact length and passing score vary by state. This practice test grades at an 80% pass mark, which is the benchmark the app uses; check your own state agency for the number that binds you, and for how long the card it earns lasts.

Whatever the state, the content is the same six areas: the navigation rules of the road, aids to navigation and the buoy system, required safety equipment, the legal side of registration and boating under the influence, emergencies from falls overboard to cold water and carbon monoxide, and safe handling, fuelling and trailering. The ten questions below come out of the Boater Safety Test Prep app's 157-question bank, which is written from the Inland Navigation Rules in 33 CFR Part 83, U.S. Coast Guard material and the state handbooks — and every question in that bank carries not just its source but the sentence in the source it rests on.

Ten questions, answered as you go

Written from 33 CFR / state handbooks

  1. Question 1 of 10Aids to Navigation

You are returning from open water toward a harbor. On which side of your boat should you keep the red buoys?

  2. Question 2 of 10Boating Emergencies

Which situations are the leading causes of boating fatalities?

  3. Question 3 of 10Handling & Trailering

What is the correct procedure before you begin fueling a gasoline boat at the dock?

  4. Question 4 of 10Legal Operation

What is true about operating a boat after drinking alcohol?

  5. Question 5 of 10Navigation Rules

In an encounter between two boats, what is the give-way vessel required to do?

  6. Question 6 of 10Required Equipment

What sound-signaling equipment is every boat required to carry?

  7. Question 7 of 10Aids to Navigation

Regulatory or information markers (which give warnings, controls, and information) are what colors?

  8. Question 8 of 10Boating Emergencies

Which VHF marine radio channel is the primary channel for distress calls and hailing?

  9. Question 9 of 10Handling & Trailering

What should you check on the trailer before a trip?

  10. Question 10 of 10Legal Operation

A boating accident involves a death. Within how long must a report generally be filed?

Ten of 30 questions taken straight from the app’s 157-question bank. Every answer keeps the app’s own explanation and the public source it was written from.

All 40 questions, answered

Take it with you

The full Boater Safety Test Prep app carries all 157 questions across the six topics, each with its explanation and the rule it comes from — and 32 of them reveal their answer as a drawn scene: the give-way track curving astern, sidelight arcs fanned open at their true 112.5°, the channel run between nun and can. Two fixed 50-question exam forms, A and B, that never share a question, timed at 50 minutes and graded at 80%; per-topic drills; a buoy and daymark reference you can study on the ramp; a review deck that clears itself; and a passage plan that counts back from your test day — all offline, bought once, no account.

What it is

157 original multiple-choice questions for the boating license test, across the six areas every boater safety course covers: navigation rules, aids to navigation, required equipment, legal operation, boating emergencies, and handling and trailering. Thirty-two of them reveal their answer as a drawn scene instead of describing it — the give-way track curving astern, sidelight arcs fanned open at their true 112.5°, the channel run between nun and can. Four tabs, Plan, Practice, Exam and Marks, with Settings behind a gear on Plan.

Why we built it

Every question is written from the U.S. Coast Guard's Navigation Rules, the federal equipment regulations and state boating handbooks, and every answer names the rule it came from. The rules that decide who gives way are geometry, so the app draws them rather than describing them, and where a rule varies by state the explanation says so. It is an independent practice tool, not the official course: not affiliated with any state agency, NASBLA or course provider, and it does not issue a certificate.
