What is a float plan, and why is it useful in an emergency?

A note left with a responsible person describing your boat, route, and expected return, so they can alert rescuers if you are overdue
A float plan tells a trusted person on shore who is aboard, your boat's description, where you are going, and when you will be back. If you do not return on time, they can give rescuers a starting point, which saves critical time.
