What is the primary difference between a single-action and a double-action revolver?

On a single-action the trigger only releases the hammer; on a double-action it both cocks and releases the hammer
The primary difference between the two types is the function of the trigger. On a single-action revolver the trigger has a single function — to release the hammer. On a double-action revolver the trigger has two functions: to cock the hammer and to release it.
