How hard is the FCC GROL (General Radiotelephone Operator License) exam?
The FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) is the commercial license technicians need to install, service, and maintain most FCC-licensed radiotelephone transmitters — in broadcast, aviation, marine, and land two-way-radio work — and earning it means passing two written elements. Element 1 (Basic Radio Law & Operating Practice) is 24 multiple-choice questions and you need 18 correct to pass; Element 3 (General Radiotelephone, the electronics-and-radio-theory exam) is 100 questions and you need 75 correct — both graded at the same 75% pass mark. The reassuring part is that every question is drawn from published, public-domain FCC question pools (144 questions for Element 1 and 600 for Element 3), so there are no trick questions and nothing is hidden: what you study is exactly what the exam draws from. The GROL is given by FCC-approved COLEMs (Commercial Operator License Examination Managers), who set their own schedules and fees, and once earned the license does not expire. Element 3 is the harder half — it spans DC and AC principles, electrical math, components and circuits, digital logic, receivers, transmitters, modulation, and antennas — so most people who struggle do so there. The single best way to pass on the first try is to drill the real pool questions until the recurring formulas and rules — Ohm's law, resonance, the marine Part 80 rules, and the emission and power limits — are automatic. The five sample questions below are pulled straight from the app's 716-question pool — answer each one and you'll see the correct choice, a plain explanation, and your score, so you know exactly where you stand before test day.
Question 1 of 5
What is a requirement of all marine transmitting apparatus used aboard United States vessels?
