What's on the AFOQT
The AFOQT is 516 multiple-choice questions in 12 subtests. Each subtest is timed, and the whole sitting takes about five hours including breaks. [Pearson VUE AFOQT page]
The format

- 12, each with its own time limit [Pearson VUE AFOQT page]
- Length

- Given by
- Pearson VUE, for the U.S. Air Force [Pearson VUE AFOQT page]
The 12 subtests, in order
This is the order Pearson VUE lists them in, “in order of appearance.” [Pearson VUE AFOQT page] A 15-minute break comes after Situational Judgment, before the Self-Description Inventory. [Pearson VUE AFOQT page]
| Subtest | Questions | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal Analogies | 25 | 8 |
| Arithmetic Reasoning | 25 | 29 |
| Word Knowledge | 25 | 5 |
| Math Knowledge | 25 | 22 |
| Reading Comprehension | 25 | 24 |
| Situational Judgment | 16 | 35 |
| Self-Description Inventory | 240 | 45 |
| Physical Science | 20 | 10 |
| Table Reading | 40 | 7 |
| Instrument Comprehension | 25 | 5 |
| Block Counting | 30 | 5 |
| Aviation Information | 20 | 8 |
The question counts add up to 516, and the time limits add up to 203 minutes. That is our arithmetic on Pearson VUE’s numbers, not a figure Pearson VUE states.
The Self-Description Inventory is not graded
Pearson VUE says the Self-Description Inventory “gauges the test-taker’s personality” and that “Questions on this subtest are not graded.” [Pearson VUE AFOQT page] It is 240 of the 516 questions and 45 of the 203 minutes.
Every question must be answered
Pearson VUE says “Each question must be answered to receive results.” [Pearson VUE AFOQT page]
A note on older pamphlets
The Air Force’s AFOQT Information Pamphlet on airforce.com lists different subtests and different question counts than Pearson VUE’s page does. For example, its table has Rotated Blocks and Hidden Figures, and 20 items for Instrument Comprehension where Pearson VUE lists 25. [Air Force AFOQT pamphlet] We use Pearson VUE’s page for the numbers above because it is the one that carries a recent update date. Check the numbers with your recruiter or test control officer before test day.
Where our practice questions fit
Our free practice test draws on six written subtests. For how to study each subtest, see the study guide.
