Schedule the Texas life, accident and health exam: cost, ID, changes

The Texas life, accident and health exam costs $49. You reserve and pay for a seat with Pearson VUE, online or by phone, at least 24 hours before the date you want. Walk-ins are not available. [Handbook p.19] [Handbook p.11]

The cost

The exam fee is $49 for the English exam (InsTX-LAH05) and $49 for the Spanish one (InsTX-LAH25). [Handbook p.19] It is paid when you make the reservation, by credit card, debit card or voucher. Payment is not accepted at the test center. [Handbook p.12] Exam fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, except as the change and cancel policy below allows. [Handbook p.12] The license application is a separate $50 fee paid to TDI after you pass. [TDI] Getting licensed has that step.

Vouchers are another way to pay. They are pre-paid, non-refundable and non-returnable, and they expire twelve months from the date they are issued. [Handbook p.12]

Reserve a seat

  • Make the reservation on Pearson VUE’s Texas insurance page. First-time users create an account. [Handbook p.11] [Pearson VUE, Texas]
  • Reserve at least twenty-four (24) hours before the date you want, online or by phone at (888) 754-7667. [Handbook p.11]
  • You must be at least 18 and have a valid Social Security number. Your legal name, date of birth and Social Security number must be identical to what you put on the license application, or no license is issued until you prove the correct information to TDI. [Handbook p.11]
  • Keep your license application in step with your exam: if you do not submit an application within twelve months of passing, you must retake the exam. [Handbook p.6]

Change or cancel

Call (888) 754-7667 at least forty-eight (48) hours before the exam to change or cancel. With proper notice you can transfer the fee to a new reservation or ask for a refund. Without it you forfeit the exam fee. [Handbook p.12] Candidates who are late or absent and have not changed or canceled in time are not admitted and forfeit the fee, though Pearson VUE will consider an excused absence for reasons such as illness, a death in the immediate family or weather if you call within 14 days. [Handbook p.12]

On the day

  • Report to the test center thirty (30) minutes before the exam and check in. [Handbook p.14]
  • Bring two forms of current signature identification. The name on the identification must exactly match the name on the registration. The primary ID must be government issued, photo-bearing and carry a signature; the secondary must contain a valid signature. Identification must be in English. Pearson VUE does not recognize grace periods, so an ID that expired yesterday is expired. [Handbook p.14]
  • Anyone without the required items is denied admission, counted absent and forfeits the exam fee. [Handbook p.14]
  • You can take a tutorial on the computer first, and its time does not reduce your exam time. [Handbook p.14]
  • The exam ends automatically when time is up, and you leave the test center with your official score in hand. [Handbook p.15]

If you do not pass

A candidate who failed can schedule a new exam within one day, and there is no limit to the number of attempts on the same exam. [Handbook p.15]

Other arrangements

  • Fingerprints are separate: IdentoGO by IDEMIA schedules all electronic fingerprint appointments, while you contact Pearson VUE to schedule the exam. [Handbook p.10]
  • English as a second language: with approval, the length of the exam becomes 1-1/2 times its usual length (the handbook’s example: a 2 hour exam becomes 3 hours). Do not reserve until Pearson VUE confirms the approval. [Handbook p.13]
  • Spanish: candidates taking the Spanish version can switch back and forth between Spanish and English at any time during the exam. [Handbook p.13]
  • Veterans who passed any Texas insurance exam since February 2019 are eligible for exam reimbursement. [Handbook p.13] TDI says to apply to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. [TDI]
